Steam Deck is getting a slight upgrade with a new OLED screen.
Coming in two variations, 512GB and 1TB (both have Micro SD slots), which will cost $549 and $649, the new Steam Deck will boast a new OLED screen and some minor enhancements. While performance remains the same, a lot of secondary features were boosted.
The biggest perk, besides the screen, is a new battery boost which Valve claims will add an additional 30-50% battery life for the unit. This comes from the new 50Whr battery, an upgrade from the previous 40Whr battery. Valve also claims this battery has reduced charging times.
The new screen is a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen, a big upgrade from the 7 inch LCD touch panel of the initial release. The unit however will remain the same size thanks to reduced size of the bezel. The brightness was also increased to 1000 nits, along with a more accurate touchscreen.
For anyone that remember the OLED PS Vita, you know the OLED screens are fantastic for these small displays. Colors are more vibrant, more contrast, and pure black display. With the increased brightness the glare issue of OLED should be mitigated.
Other small improvements include the screen now able to hit 90Hz, but will remain at a resolution of 1080×800. The wifi was also upgraded to WI-FI 6E which will allow the unit to download games much faster. One major thing noted on the official page is also an easier ability to repair the unit thanks to better placement of screws on the back. IfixIt will be an official repair partner.
For those that may not be too interested in the new model, the previous versions are also getting a price reduction as well. Valve does note that the 64GB and 256gb models will be discontinued soon. The prices include:
- 64GB Model – $349 (Previously $399)
- 256GB Model – $399 (Previously $529)
- 512GB – $449 (Previously $649)
There will also be a limited edition version for USA and Canada with a translucent orange design. This model will be exclusive to 1TB versions and cost $30 more at $679.
It’s worth noting this is not Steam Deck 2, that is in fact not scheduled until “at least” 2025. You can pre-order the OLED model soon, with it being on sale November 16.
