The PS5 is finally getting a redesign, but there seems to be some hidden costs.
Sony revealed on the official PlayStation Blog that coming this holiday is a new PS5 model which is lighter and smaller than the current version. The new model will come in at 30% reduced volume, and 18/24 percent weight is reduced for the physical/digital models.
The new model also includes four panels instead of just two panels. The top two panels will be a gloss finish, with the bottom still being matte. However that potentially means current shells (including the newly released Spider-Man shell) might not fit.
Interesting notes for the new release includes a new detachable disc drive for those that buy the digital version of the console. The new drive will cost an additional $79.99, which combined with the $50 price increase on the console itself will put it over $30 more than just buying a physical unit.
Yes you read that right, the digital edition of the PS5 will now cost $449 compared to the current price of $399.
That isn’t the only price increase either. According to Sony the units will no longer come with the vertical stand and instead you will need to buy a separate stand for $39.99. The stand will be compatible with all versions of the PS5, but is a bit of an odd choice. In almost all of Sony’s photos of the PS5 they show it in vertical form, and it appears to be the most popular way to place the PS5, so to only include a Horizontal stand is just a way to milk more money out of new buyers. The horizontal “stand” is hardly anything worth noting either and appears to just be a small plastic piece to hold the front of the PS5 up.
It’s unclear if the new model will be stable without the stand. In the pictures shown it goes slightly underneath the outer shell, which means you’d have to rest it on the shell without the stand.
Sony notes that once current models are sold out in stores this new model will fully replace them as the only model available to buy. So if you want the $50 cheaper model, or don’t want all the hidden new costs, I suggest trying to run out and grab one now.
