Portal seems to be the new keyword over at PlayStation as the new handheld device and headphones follow the new branding. Check it out.
Sony recently revealed a new PlayStation handheld device over the summer, but until today we knew very little about it. Now Sony has showcased a little more.
The PlayStation Portal Remote Player will come in at $199, and it does a lot less than initially expected. According to the PlayStation Blog, the device is purely a wifi enabled device to stream your PS5 anywhere…. inside your home. The device works over the same wifi network as your PS5 to quickly change from playing on your TV, to the handheld. As I stated in my previous article, this is disappointing for gamers like me expecting a little more from it.
It does include a 3.5mm jack for headphones, luckily, but streaming games via PS Plus and PSVR titles are not supported. All games need to be installed to your PS5, with the PS5 running to support the device.
Also revealed was a new Pulse Elite Wireless Headset and Pulse Explore Wireless Earbuds.
The big feature of these new headsets is the addition of consumer Planar magnetic drivers, which is a huge deal if you’re into audio. The earbuds are the first to offer planar drivers to consumers in the market.
Also included is Sony typical noise canceling features with AI enhanced features, along with a retractable microphone on the headset, and dual microphones on the buds. Both are stated to offer lossless audio via PlayStation Link.
Speaking of PlayStation Link, sadly PS5 will still require a USB adapter to support the new headsets. The PlayStation Link will, however, provide lossless audio to the supported headsets and will be sold separately so PC players can also utilize the link features. Additionally the earbuds are blutooth compatible with other devices, and can connect to two devices at once. Which means you could be blasting away zombies, and also answer a phone call at the same time.
Pulse Elite will retail for $149 while the Eabuds will be a hefty $199. The USB adapter currently has no price for standalone purchase. No pre-order date or release date for the headsets or portable player has been announced, but all are expected “later this year.”
