God of War: Ragnarok Delayed to 2022; Confirmed to Release on PS5 & PS4

One of PlayStation‘s most anticipated games of 2021 is being delayed. Sony Santa Monica Studios has officially pushed back God of War: Ragnarok to 2022. In addition to that news, Sony has also confirmed it’ll be a cross-gen release.

Today, God of War developer Sony Santa Monica Studios released a statement that God of War: Ragnarok has been moved to 2022. Previously, the game was slated to release on PlayStation 5 in 2021. Sony Santa Monica Studios made the call to push the game back for the sake of their team’s “safety and wellbeing”.

In addition to that announcement, Head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst revealed in a PlayStation blog that God of War: Ragnarok, along with Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7, will also release on PlayStation 4.

“Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 – for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 – we’ll continue looking at that, And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.”

The reveal that God of War: Ragnarok will be a PlayStation 4 title has seemed to ruffle some feathers on the internet, shocking I know. However, the move makes sense, as PlayStation 5 stock remains low. Sony would rather do cross-gen ports that alienate players who haven’t yet got their hands on a PS5.

As for God of War: Ragnarok‘s delay, if the team felt as if their members and their families were going through an unhealthy amount of stress to make a release window, then this is the right move to make. It’s better to wait and allow studios to take their time than to push for a game that may not live up to standards at this juncture at the cost of people’s health.

Stay tuned for more.
