In two months, Square Enix will launch their PlayStation 5 version of the critically-acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake, called Intergrade. Along with the PS5 version will be a new episode focused on the beloved Wutai ninja Yuffie.
Today, Square Enix has revealed that the Yuffie-centered episode will be called Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission. It’s a clever, yet tongue-in-cheek title, but it’s also perfect. It seemed odd that Square Enix would call the PS5 version Intergrade to begin with, but to use that in correlation with the Yuffie episode as both a break from the story and recognition that it would indeed be happening during the events of Midgar is stellar wordplay.
Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission will feature unique combat mechanics for Yuffie that highlight her recognizable and trademark style. Of course we’ll definitely get to use her iconic giant shuriken, but we’ll also get to enjoy Yuffie’s unique Elemental Ninjustu. Below is each ability detailed by Square Enix.
Shuriken & Elemental Ninjutsu
Players can look forward to utilizing Yuffie’s signature battle style in combat while they infiltrate the shadowy Shinra Corporation to steal a powerful materia and restore glory to her homeland, as she shines in both close and long-range combat. As a member of Wutai’s elite corps of ninja operatives, her Unique Ability allows her to throw her iconic massive throwing star at enemies. During that time, she is able to attack with long-range ninjutsu that can be augmented with her Elemental Ninjutsu ability, which can change its affinity to fire, ice, lightning or wind.
Banishment
Another of Yuffie’s abilities, “Banishment,” unleashes an attack that does more damage based on how much ATB was spent before it. Similar to her Unique Ability, its elemental affinity can be changed with Elemental Ninjutsu.
Windstorm
Yuffie can also use “Windstorm,” which creates a damaging gust of wind that damages nearby enemies and launches them towards her. Players can look forward to learning even more about Yuffie’s specialized ninja fighting style and enjoy an expanded gameplay experience featuring multiple new combat and gameplay additions for FF7R EPISODE INTERmission.
Finally, Square Enix also announced the official voice cast for Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission:
- Yuffie Kisaragi, voiced by Suzie Yeung
- Sonon Kusakabe, voiced by Aleks Le
- Weiss, voiced by Daman Mills
- Zhijie, voiced by Griffin Puatu
- Nayo, voiced by Ashley Boettcher
- Billy Bob, voiced by David Goldstein
- Polk, voiced by Daniel Amerman
One of those characters, Weiss, appears to be one of INTERmission’s main villains. Final Fantasy VII fans who played Dirge of Cerberus will remember him as a villain from that game. For a little more backstory and a reminder of his roots, Square Enix twitter has you covered:
Voiced by Daman Mills, Weiss is the sadistic ruler of Shinra’s top-secret underground research center, Deepground.
Out of fear, Shinra have restrained him to a throne deep within the confines of the facility, where he bides his time, waiting to exact his revenge… pic.twitter.com/ahE91XX2Hi
