This has to be one of the best months for PlayStation Plus with two amazing smaller known titles!
PlayStation Plus titles are typically pretty meh every month, but this month we got some stellar lesser known releases that everyone should try.
PS Plus August line up includes: Death’s Door, Dreams, and PGA Tour 2K23.
Besides that last title, this is an excellent month. And hey, if you’re into golf then it’s even better, but personally my focus is on the two first titles.
Death’s Door is one of the best games ever created. I personally have been eying it ever since it swept the awards season as an indie title, but finally getting to play it makes me believe the hype was real. The top down action title is filled with intense combat and amazing art styles that will keep your eyes and ears filled with joy. The hidden secrets and level design make what is an otherwise short traversal experience, rather lengthy. Similar to new Zelda you are free to approach the game in an open ended way with no real guide on where to go, or how to approach the game. This means you could often come across a roadblock and need to go level up elsewhere to get past it.
The second title is probably the most undervalued and under looked title Sony has ever released. Dreams is not simply a game, it’s a full game engine that opens access for soon-to-be developers right on their console. You can create assets, find assets other people made, and program an entire experience right on your PS4/PS5. (Within minutes of opening the game I found someone recreated P.T.!) I say experience because it isn’t just quirky little games, you can make short films, music, and literally anything you can imagine. It does take some creative senses to get going, but with the evolving community it is easy.
Dreams has seen over 100k new creators since going to PS Plus two days ago. That’s 100k new people creating and expanding this game even further. I could argue Dreams should have been free to PS Plus users a long time ago, not a month before the core services are about to shut down.
Maybe the influx of new users will have Media Molecule and Sony change their minds, but on September 1st all the live service support for Dreams will be gone. That means no more awards, 5GB storage limit (limiting higher tuned games), and it’ll be a madhouse for users. The worst part is that the promised multiplayer features won’t make it, and PSVR2 and PS5 native support has been dropped (The game works on PS5 as a PS4 title). Losing out on PSVR2 seems like a double whammy for Sony.
The nice thing about the update is that users are now free to use Dreams creations outside of the app, finally. But with all that said, this is the perfect reason to check out this months games. Get into Dreams, check out a few creations, and see how powerful this tool can be. Then go have a thrilling experience with Death’s Door.
