Quantic Dream Rumored to be Developing a Star Wars Game

At a time when Disney has allowed more studios than just Electronic Arts to develop Star Wars game, a new studio can potentially be added to the list. The creators of Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream are rumored to be in the process of developing a Star Wars game.

Last week, this rumor came to light when YouTuber Gautoz claimed that the studio had a made a deal with Disney to produce a Star Wars game, after the 3-year exclusivity deal with Sony had expired. This claim was then supported by sources close to DualShockers, who reported that the title had been in the works for about 18 months.

Today, a separate source further confirmed to Kotaku that Quantic Dream is working on a Star Wars title and even included a few interesting details about the untitled game.

Until now, Quantic Dream has been known for making quick-time-event-driven games where your choices affect the outcome of the story. With that style, action has always been limited compared to other games. According to this source, Quantic Dream’s Star Wars game will be a major departure from their traditional style, adopting more action-oriented gameplay, with open-world and multiplayer elements.

Given Quantic Dream‘s track record for distributing quality cinematic-driven narratives, the idea of this studio developing a Star Wars game is exciting. However, it’s best to temper expectations at this juncture. The reason for this has to do with the uphill climb the studio is having to completely revamp their way of developing to produce what sounds like is an ambitious game.

Kotaku‘s source says that Quantic Dream‘s proprietary game engine and development tools are ill-equipped to handle the creation of a more action and exploratory game. This has sparked a lot of internal debate and tension regarding what is possible for this Star Wars game. It appears the studio may be biting off a bit more than they can chew, at this stage of development. However, 18 months in means there is still time to change their mind of what this game can be.

While there are internal battles going on at Quantic Dream, the studio is dealing with several legal battles, as well. Back in 2018, French publications reported that the studio fostered a toxic work environment that included sexist and racist jokes and a lot of crunch. Quantic Dream denied these reports and subsequently sued the publications and former employees. Some of these suits have been dismissed but many of them are ongoing.

If Quantic Dream‘s Star Wars game proves to be real, we’ll have its confirmation here.
