The Recap: Entertainment News for the Week of 8/26 – 8/31

The final week of August brought fresh news from Nintendo, but also plenty of other gaming/movie news you may have missed. Catch up here!

New ‘Never Let Go’ Trailer

Lionsgate revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Halle Berry starring thriller, Never Let Go. It continues to look all manner of creepy.

From visionary director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl) and the creative minds behind Stranger Things and Arrival comes NEVER LET GO. In this new psychological thriller/horror, as an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother, played by Academy Award® winner Halle Berry (Actress in a Leading Role, 2001 – Monster’s Ball), and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

Never Let Go hits theaters on September 20th.

‘Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince’ Gets PC & Mobile Release Date

Square Enix revealed a release date this week for the PC (via Steam) and Mobile versions of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. The game will arrive (with all previously released DLC from the Switch) on September 11th.

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince features Psaro, the demon prince, whose curse prevents him from harming monsters. As a result, he must become a Monster Wrangler, recruiting, and fighting alongside monsters throughout the various environments of the fantastical world of Nadiria. Over the course of this adventure, the seasons will regularly cycle through Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, which not only changes the landscape, but also opens new areas and players will encounter different monsters specific to that season.

 

One of the most powerful tools in the player arsenal is the newly evolved synthesis system which allows players to create completely new monsters by combining those already on their roster. Players can experiment and eventually unlock over 500 monsters, including franchise favorites, dark lords, and completely new creatures. Furthermore, Quickfire Contest, an automatic speed match, will allow players to compete in a single player challenge mode in 30 consecutive matches.

Genshin Impact 5.0 Out Now 

The Fowers Resplendent on the Sun-Scorched Sojourn update included the new nation of Natlan, the sixth nation of Teyvat, along with three new playable characters: Mualani, Kinich, and Kachina.

Version 5.0 also celebrates the fourth anniversary of Genshin Impact with a wealth of rewards and system optimizations. Players can invite a free 5-star character from the Standard Wish lineup, claim up to Intertwined Fate ×10 in the daily login event, and receive Primogems ×1,600, two exclusive gadgets, and more via in-game mail. Additionally, more updates on the Character Event Wish, Weapon Event Wish, and a new tool that allows players to obtain an Artifact with some custom affixes will be featured.

Marvel Celebrates 85 Years of Storytelling

Marvel released a new (though it technically leaked out the other week) video to celebrate their 85th anniversary. While it includes footage from a number of things, including archival footage of Stan Lee, fans were quick to notice we got brief new glimpses of Captain America: Brave New WorldDaredevil: Born AgainIronheart, and Thunderbolts* footage.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 New Cinematic Trailer

Saber and Focus Entertainment released a new cinematic trailer, “Angels of Death,” for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 to show off some glorious combat ahead of it’s launch next month.

Get ready for battle with Lieutenant Titus and his battle-brothers Chairon and Gadriel. These are the three playable characters of a fully co-op-enabled campaign, while custom-made Space Marine characters are playable in PvE missions and PvP battles across various modes—just a taste of all the carnage that awaits.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PCs on September 9th.

Beeltejuice Themed OUIJA Board Now Available

The iconic “board game” is getting a pretty perfect movie tie-in edition. The Op Games announced this week that OUIJA: Beetlejuice Edition is out now for fans/players to pick up.

‘Napoleon’ Director’s Cut Now on Apple TV+

Surprise! This week brought a new version of Ridely Scott’s Napoleon, featuring 48 new minutes of footage added in.

“Napoleon: The Director’s Cut” stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader. The film is a fresh and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby. The director’s cut delves deeper into Josephine’s origin story and features more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets, and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. The audience is also given more details about Napoleon’s demise, from his attempted assassination to his failed invasion of Russia.

Sigourney Weaver Honored With Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

Three-time Oscar nominated Sigourney Weaver was honored with the accolade on Wednesday, becoming the third American actress to be receive the award. Jane Fonda was given the honor in 2017 and Jamie Lee Curtis in 2021.

Weaver’s many roles, which include Alien, GHostbusters, and Avatar, have long led her to the festival. She spokes with Deadline in an interview ahead of the event, where she recounted being told she had “no talent” when she was a student at Yale, how she had just come off Broadway to take up the ever-iconic role of Ellen Ripley, and speaks highly of her long career in acting.
