Square Enix’s ‘Project Athia’ a PS5 Console Exclusive for ‘At Least 24 Months’

While we still don’t know much about Square Enix’s Project Athia game, it looks like PS5 owners will be the only ones to play it for a while.

At the beginning of the summer, Sony held a video game showcase for titles coming to PS5. Among the massive catalog of AAA games, Square Enix debuted a brand new IP called Project Athia (working title).

Not much is known about the upcoming fantasy game, outside of the fact that it is being developed by SE’s Luminous Productions and the team behind Final Fantasy XV. Yet, that was enough for Sony to lock in a 2 year exclusive deal for the game.

This is according to a new and upcoming PS5 games demo reel released by PlayStation. At about the :30 mark, you can see the fine print say “Not available on other consoles until at least 24 months after release date”.

During the PS5 showcase back in June, this was something we had noticed that it would be a PS5 console exclusive but would still also release on PC, on the same date. However, what we didn’t know was how long that exclusivity would be.

Having a 2 year exclusive rights deal with a game is pretty groundbreaking. Most exclusive games by 3rd party developers run 6 months to a year, as is evident by Final Fantasy VII Remake and Bethesda’s (now owned by Microsoft) Deathloop and GhostWire: Tokyo.

It’s a pretty massive leap of faith for Sony to acquire exclusive rights to an IP for 2 years. However, considering how incredible the teaser trailer is and the fact that they designed the game specifically for PS5, we shouldn’t be too surprised.

As more news regarding Project Athia is revealed, we’ll have it here on Cinelinx.
