It’s insane to think the world has been enjoy PlayStation consoles for three decades now, but Sony has officially announced some plans for the celebration that makes the fact hard to ignore.
Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s Vice President of Global Marketing, penned up a blog post detailing some of what’s in store for fans to commemorate the milestone.
“As we celebrate this Friday’s upcoming release of Astro Bot, Team Asobi’s tribute to 30 years of iconic PlayStation characters, stories, and magical moments, we want to thank you for the love and passion you’ve shown for PlayStation,” Tomatis wrote.
Free multiplayer weekend and tournaments
Sony will be offering a free online multiplayer weekend and esports tournaments later this month. The free multiplayer weekend will take place September 21 and 22, which is the same weekend the publisher will host a series of tournaments including NBA 2K24, NBA 2K25, Madden NFL 24, MLB The Show 24, EA UFC 5, Tekken 8, and Guilty Gear Strive.
The news release says that PlayStation players that own any of these games and qualify for the tournaments will have the chance to win a special 30th anniversary-themed avatar and other game-specific prizes.
My First GT
Sony will be releasing My First GT to Gran Turismo 7 sometime this holiday season. The update will include fan-favorite cars, tracks, and race events “that evoke the nostalgia and excitement of the very first GT experience.”
Shapes of Play
In December, Sony will launch the “Shapes of Play” collection of products, the blog post says.
“[Shapes of Play is] crafted by the team behind the design of PlayStation consoles, gives you opportunities to create fun moments with our iconic shapes,” the release says.
Tomatis describes the three collections as:
- Shapes of Play: Battle is a board game where you can challenge a friend to line up four different shapes of the same color on the board to win.
- Shapes of Play: Create is a set of magnetic blocks that you can position in any direction to create fun shapes.
- Shapes of Play: Recharge lets you experience a new way to recharge between games, especially after that tough boss battle.
Iconic soundtracks
From October to January, Sony will be releasing digital soundtracks on Spotify from fan-favorite franchises including: God of War, God of War II, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk, and Unit 13.
The soundtracks will also be available for purchase on Amazon Music and Apple Music, among other music retailers.
Sony says there is more in store for the 30th anniversary celebration.
