Rumor: Official PS5 Earbuds Could Be In The Works

A new report suggest that Sony is developing new official PlayStation earbuds for the PS5.

According to Insider Gaming, Sony is developing two new sound options for the PS5. The first being new official PlayStation earbuds. The earbuds will have a battery life of 5 hours, similar to Airpods, and come with a charging cradle that will allow the PS5 to charge them via USB.

The second part of that is the interesting thing to me. While basically all earbuds come with the charging cradle, the PS5 has limited USB options so to take one of those slots for the earbuds seems odd, why? Well the PS5 currently doesn’t support wireless audio, so if you want to use wireless headsets you need to also plug in a Bluetooth dongle. Even the official PlayStation Pulse headset requires the dongle. Combine that with the upcoming PSVR, and your external HDD, and all the USB slots are taken up. So where do we plug in the controller?

According to the rumor there will also be a new headset released as well, to replace the current Pulse headset. Both are expected to be announced soon, and released by the end of the year. There are current rumors floating around that Sony may be hosting a PlayStation event soon, which is likely when these will get announced.

Sony themselves are already a leader in audio and make really good wireless headphones elsewhere, including noise canceling earbuds. If they can bridge that gap and enable wireless audio on the PS5 that would be great. Current official PlayStation offerings are rather lackluster by comparison in audio quality, and constantly need adjustments in settings. As for that new headset? Hopefully it has better build quality than the very fragile Pulse headset.
