Another 650 People Laid Off by Microsoft

Just a little over a week after Phil Spencer admitted to making “some of the worst decisions in gaming,” Microsoft has announced another round of layoffs that won’t affect him.

Some not so fun gaming industry news this morning, as Microsoft/Xbox announced they’re laying off another 650 people. This brings their total layoffs to 2,500 people in 2024 ALONE. Xbox Chief Phil Spencer issued a memo to the staff this morning (seen by The Verge) revealing the cuts are related to the “restructuring” brought about by the Activision/Blizzard acquisition.

He emphasized studios aren’t being impacted (for now) and the cuts are being made to “corporate and supporting functions.” So basically, marketing and HR related positions are being cut, but don’t fret, Phil himself and any other high ranking execs aren’t being impacted!

Despite the assurance these new layoffs won’t affect upcoming games/studios, it still sucks. Even more so considering during a PAX West panel just last week, Spencer admitted to making “some of the worst game choice decisions” when it comes to Xbox. Must be nice to be able to admit to being the one messing up for the company and not having to worry about any of the 2500 layoffs affecting you.

The gaming industry continues to get hit, and while many gamers were hoping to see Xbox make some kind of response to Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro reveal….this is what we’re getting instead.
