Universal Pictures announced today that the release of Wicked: Part One will move from December 25, 2024, to Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
First announced nearly ten years ago, Wicked has been through a very long development phase under producer Marc Platt, which also included several delays, the pandemic playing a major part. So, it’s nice to get some get news then regarding the release date, evn though it’s only 4 weeks sooner. Originally announced as one film, Wicked was split into two films in April 2022. The sequel, Wicked: Part Two, as of now is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2025.
Next holiday season, WICKED, the record-shattering, Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon becomes a gravity-defying cinematic sensation.
The feature-film adaptation of the untold story of the Witches of Oz is directed by electrifying filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) and is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, Bridge of Spies, Trial Of The Chicago 7) and David Stone.
Wicked, based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winne Holzman and by legendary Academy Award® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.
