What Can We Expect from the MCU’s Daredevil?

Daredevil is joining the MCU proper with a new Disney Plus series, so what exactly can fans expect to see? We have some ideas.

After months of speculation since Charlie Cox’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we finally have confirmation that Daredevil will be back in a Disney+ series. So it begs the question, what can we expect to see in the show and who will be meeting everyone’s favorite blind lawyer/vigilante be going next? Below are just a few ideas of what we might be seeing in Daredevil’s return to the small screen.

The Main Cast

If Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are back, surely we can’t go without Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson as Karen and Foggy. When we last saw the trio they’d put Fisk behind bars and reformed their business as “Nelson, Murdock and Paige”. Foggy and Matt, the lawyers and Karen, a skilled private investigator.

When we see Matt in Spider-Man: No Way Home he’s taken the highest-profile case in the world, so it seems their business has been doing pretty well. That being said, Peter and May weren’t exactly wealthy and Matt was the kind-hearted type to take hopeless cases with little promise of pay. Regardless, it’s safe to assume that “Nelson, Murdock and Paige” are still going strong.

New Costume

One of the biggest critiques of Daredevil, an otherwise well-received series, was its attempt at his superhero outfit. While the show’s second season certainly improved on his helmet design, ultimately the highlight of the show’s costumes was his black suits which stray away from the more colorful superhero aspects of the character.

While this darker take fits the tone of that depiction, the MCU will likely take a different approach in this series. With the massive increase of comic accurate costumes in Phase 4, it seems likely that we will see Matt Murdoch don some brighter garments. This could either be the iconic red or, the heavily rumored, classic yellow outfit. Execution is everything but Marvel hasn’t missed on their costume design recently.

Bullseye

A direct continuation of Daredevil seems fairly unlikely, while many of the characters are sure to return this will be most MCU watchers introduction to the character. That being said, Bullseye is a classic Daredevil villain who was part of what made the show’s third season so compelling.

The series ended with a cliffhanger on Ben Poindexter’s fate and teased a more comic accurate evolution of the character. Bringing Wilson Bethel back as a fully realized Bullseye in a comic-accurate costume would be a great payoff for fans of the series and a chance for the MCU to introduce one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains.

Kingpin

Vincent D’Onofrio was a highlight of the series, one of the best comic book castings to date and a chilling villain. The correlation between quality in the series and Kingpin’s appearances felt apparent. So his return to the role in Hawkeye was great news, seeing such a “big” character continue to be portrayed by such a talented actor was great.

While his fate was left vague in Hawkeye’s finale, he almost certainly survived to then appear in Echo, Maya Lopez’s solo series, next year. However, even a brief reunion between the Kingpin of Crime and Devil of Hell’s Kitchen seems like an opportunity that couldn’t go amiss. That being said, Fisk returning as the main villain might be retreading old ground a bit, so a cameo appearance feels more fitting.

Echo

As mentioned it seems likely that Kingpin will be making his next appearance in next year’s Echo. Maya Lopez’s comic origins are heavily tied to Daredevil. She was introduced in the Daredevil comics and is his arch nemesis’ adoptive daughter. It’s been heavily speculated that Cox might appear as Daredevil in Echo, but it seems equally viable that Maya may make her appearance in a Daredevil project; perhaps after meeting the horned hero in her series.

The Defenders

With the return of all these stars from Marvel’s television ventures, there’s even more hope to see many returns from the various heroes, especially The Defenders. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and even The Punisher are all popular comic book characters who have as much a place in the wider Marvel Universe as any hero. No doubt we will see many of these make their return in the MCU but having it be with Charlie Cox could be a great opportunity to relaunch the heroes of the Defenders world together. Recent Instagram posts from Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Kristen Ritter (Jessica Jones), seems to tease their return.

Spider-Man

Spidey and Daredevil are a classic comic book duo, with countless team-ups and crossovers throughout their history of the Marvel Universe, they even share a few villains. They finally got to appear together on screen, however briefly, in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

While we didn’t get to see the two heroes appear together in costume, one crossover lays the groundwork for another, though the ending of that film did essentially erase its events. Regardless, the continued collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony gives hope for many more crossovers with the webhead. As he seems to be more tied intrinsically tied to New York City now, he and Daredevil have some common ground to fight for in the MCU.

She-Hulk

Daredevil isn’t the only superhero lawyer in the Marvel universe. In August, viewers will be introduced She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. No doubt the show will be depicting a fair few legal proceedings, and have its fair share of ties to the wider MCU, especially with Jennifer Walters being directly tied to superhuman legal proceedings. Matt Murdock and Jennifer Walters working together or opposing each other in the courtroom would be a hell of a way to build the next in a long list of superhero duos.

Matt Murdock’s return has been clamoured for by countless fans, we were ecstatic for his return in No Way Home and we can’t wait to see where he might show up next. But it’s great to finally know that Daredevil will be holding his own in another solo project from Marvel.
