The season 4 renewal of The Witcher came with a surprising twist: someone new will be playing Geralt of Riva.
While Witcher fans were pleased to hear that Netflix had renewed the show for a fourth season, many were less pleased to hear that the lead role was being recast. Indeed, the announcement included the news that Henry Cavill would be departing the lead role to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
Henry Cavill spoke warmly of his successor in the role of Geralt:
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Given how closely Henry Cavill has been tied to the role of Geralt of Riva, it will be most interesting to see how The Witcher handles such a major casting change.
