Sony Pictures is looking to dive deeper into their IP catalog and is working on a series based on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with Jason Ning developing.
Well here’s a bit of interesting news. Jason Ning, who is currently a co-executive producer on the upcoming Silk: Spider Society series for Sony/Prime Video is deepening his relationship with Sony Pictures Television. As Deadline reports, he has inked a new overall deal with the studio and is already working on stuff beyond the Spider-Man IP.
On top of Silk, he’s currently developing a series adaptation of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. No, this won’t really be connected to the movie, but rather the series of novels (five in all) in which the film was based on.
Published in the early 1900s, Wang DuLu’s Crane Iron Pentalogy tells the story of four generations of Youxia (which literally translates to “wandering vigilantes”), with each novel featuring connections to each other. The Ang Lee movie actually borrowed from multiple novels in the series to tell it’s story, so I’m very interested to see how a series, which can dive deeper into the books, handles it all.
Either way, it sounds like we’re in store for some awesome Chinese action/storytelling! No word on a service (I imagine it’ll be Prime Video like other Sony TV projects), or a release window, but definitely something to keep our eye on.
