Back in 2020, it was revealed that Netflix was creating a series based on Stan Sakai‘s beloved comic series Usagi Yojimbo. Two years later, it’s finally debuting on the streaming service.
According to comicbook.com, Netflix has announced that Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles, the series based on the indie comic, will release on April 28, 2022.
Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles follows the teenage rabbit, Samurai Yuichi, descendent of the great warrior Miyamoto Usagi, on his epic quest to become a true samurai. Yuichi leads a ragtag team of misfit heroes – including a roguish bounty hunter, a cunning ninja, an acrobatic pickpocket and a faithful pet lizard – as he battles depth-charging moles, metal-tipped winged bats, and monsters from another dimension, all in the pursuit to become the best Samurai Usagi!
Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles is executive produced by original creator Stan Sakai. It is also executive produced by showrunners Candie and Doug Langdale. Sakai isn’t just an executive producer in name, though. He is said to be deeply involved in the adaptation, going so far as saying, “I approve everything”.
“And have input at every stage of the animation process, from the story to design to animatics, even to the choice of voice actors. It’s something I’m very involved in. Gaumont, Netflix and I have a great working relationship. There’s a mutual respect all around — respect for each other, respect for the property of Usagi and also respect for the Japanese culture, which is very important to me.”
Voice actors Sakai looks to have approved are: Darren Barnet as main character Samurai Yuichi, along with Shelby Rabara, Aleks Le, and Mallory Low.
Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles will release on April 28, 2022, exclusively on Netflix.
