This afternoon brings word that John DiMaggio has signed a deal to return as the iconic character Bender in the new Futurama revival.
When Hulu announced it was bringing Futurama back (yet again) fans rejoiced, but the joy soon turned to confusion/dismay as we learned John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender, wasn’t among the returning voice cast. The result was #BenderGate, as the actor (who called for better pay for himself and his fellow cast members) made it clear he wanted to return, and fans spoke out in hopes of getting Hulu to get it together.
DiMaggio himself announced the end of the saga, revealing he’s signed on to reprise his role in the upcoming revival along with his co-starts:
“I’M BACK, BABY! So damn grateful for the love and support of fans and colleagues alike during this whole time (especially my wife, Kate), and I cannot wait to get back to work with my ‘Futurama’ family. #Bendergate is officially over, so put it on the back of a shelf behind Xmas decorations, or maybe in that kitchen drawer with all of the other crap you put in there like old unusable crazy glue, or maybe even put it in a jar you save farts in. Whatever floats your boat, I don’t care, you get the picture. I’M BACK, BABY! BITE MY SHINY METAL ASS!”
Production on the 20-episode revival is already underway with plans to release them in 2023. Futurama is one of my all-time favorite shows and something I frequently find myself re-watching. I’m thrilled they were able to work out a new deal to allow EVERYONE the chance to return for me.
