Invincible Season 2 – Part 2: The Gold Standard of Animated Storytelling | Review

The second half of Invincible‘s second season arrives this month and manages to be even more impressive than the first half.

Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson)

With Great Power, Comes Great Emotional Strain

The first half of Season 2 put the focus on Mark (Omni-Man’s son) as he struggles to come to terms with what his father did, while trying to become the person he wants to be. After the events of Season 2 Part 1 of Invincible, fans were left with a lot of questions about the fate of the show’s main characters. Specifically, they were curious about what would happen to Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) and Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun), who had just faced off against a group of powerful Viltrumite soldiers.

In the aftermath of the battle, things weren’t looking good for Omni-Man. He had been captured by the Viltrumites and was set to be executed for turning his back on the empire. This left Mark in a difficult position; torn between his loyalty to his father and his sense of duty to the people he had sworn to protect.

To make matters worse, Mark also had to deal with the aftermath of another conflict. The Thraxian people had been attacked by the Viltrumites and many of them had been killed. Mark’s half-Thraxan brother was among the survivors and due the the rapid aging of the Thraxan people, Mark was asked to take him back to earth to protect him.

It’s worth noting that Debbie’s true character truly shines through in this situation. While it has always been a difficult task to take care of her son after her husband massacres his team of superheroes, taking care of her ex’s half-alien offspring is an entirely different ball game.

This new addition to their family brought with him a whole host of issues and challenges that they had never anticipated. The boy’s half-alien heritage meant that he had different needs and requirements than a regular child, which only served to complicate matters further.

Despite all this, Debbie refused to give up or let her family fall apart. She stepped up to the challenge with admirable courage and determination, determined to do whatever it took to keep her family together and ensure that they all came out of this situation stronger than ever before.

Gillian Jacobs (Atom Eve), Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Zachary Quinto (Robot), Ross Marquand (The Immortal), Monster Girl, Khary Payton (Black Samson)

As the plot begins to unravel, the newly formed Guardians of the Globe find themselves facing a series of colossal challenges that test their physical and emotional limits. They are tasked with battling a variety of formidable extraterrestrial beings, including alien races whose intentions are not always clear, and other ruthless villains determined to wreak havoc on the world.

However, the challenges facing the Guardians are not only physical. They also struggle to come to grips with the emotional consequences of losing some of their teammates. As they continue to pursue justice, they are forced to confront difficult questions about their strength and ability to function as a team without the guidance and support of Mark Grayson.

Despite these obstacles, the Guardians remain resolute in their commitment to safeguarding the planet and its inhabitants. They are determined to overcome any challenge and prove themselves worthy of their role as Earth’s protectors.

An Invincible Story That Sets a New Standard

Invincible‘s Season 2 so far is an exceptional season that stands out among the rest thanks to its detailed character development. The show’s beloved superheroes undergo significant changes, and we get to witness their loved ones evolve as well. This is where the writing truly shines, as Kirkman and his team of animators put in an exceptional amount of work to make this show the best animated series on any streaming platform.

The show’s unique approach to character development is what sets it apart. The audience is given a chance to see the characters mature and grow, facing challenges and obstacles that force them to reevaluate their values and beliefs.

The writing is masterful, and the characters’ arcs are well-planned and executed with precision. Additionally, the return of characters like Allen The Alien (Seth Rogan), and the now-evil Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) adds depth and complexity to the plot. These characters help to highlight the fantastic branching story that Season 2 features, with multiple storylines that weave together seamlessly.

One of the most impressive aspects of Season 2 Part 2 is the character development of Mark. As the story progresses, we see him face new challenges and make difficult choices that force him to grow and evolve as a character. Moreover, the animation continues to be nothing short of stunning. The characters are brought to life in a way that makes them feel real and relatable, while the action sequences are incredibly well-choreographed.

Last, but certainly not least, I got to give it up to the voice cast. They make these characters feel uniquely alive. Without their skill behind the mics, all the flash and animation wouldn’t have nearly the same impact.

Invincible Season 2 Part 2 debuts exclusively on Prime Video starting March 14, 2024.
