Marvel closed out their SDCC 2024 Hall H panel tonight with the official details on the next Avengers films, including a new title, returning directors, and Doctor Doom casting!
I can honestly say, I wasn’t expecting to write this sentence but…Robert Downey Jr. is Doctor Doom! Iron Man himself is returning to the MCU with a different take, as the actor will portray the new version (from Fantastic Four’s alternate dimension) of Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers films.
The Avengers news comes near the end of the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con as Joe and Anthony Russo took to the stage, confirming their return to direct the next two Avengers films. As expected, with Marvel cutting ties with actor Jonathan Majors, Kang will no longer be the main “big bad” and and thus Kang Dynasty no longer works as the Avengers 5 title.
Thankfully, this evening’s presentation gives us a new title, Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters in May 2026. This will be followed a year later by Avengers: Secret Wars in May 2027.
I’m very much excited for this and eager to see Robert Downey Jr. return to the MCU. I know it feels like a quick nostalgia grab, but if done right, this could be really damn cool. Either way, the announcements have my blood pumping and more excited about the future of Marvel!
