Warner Bros. is re-entering The Matrix as they’ve announced a new film in the iconic franchise is in the works!
What a happy day! As one of the people who believe there have been no bad Matrix movies, I’m over the moon to see Warner Bros. has officially announced a new film is in the works. I enjoyed how Resurrections continued the story and expanded the depth of that universe (a colony of humans and machines working together is neat!) and was worried I’d have to wait nearly another 20 years before they came back to it.
Now, just days after the original film celebrated its 25th anniversary, WB has announced the new film (which we’re calling Matrix 5 for lack of a better term) will mark the first time someone other than Lana or Lilly Wachowski will sit behind the wheel for it. Lana Wachowski, who directed Resurrections solo, is still on board as executive producer, but Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, The Martian, Bad Times at the El Royale) will both write and direct the flick!
No details on what the new story will entail, or if any of the previous cast will be returning, but WB Production President Jesse Ehrman issued this statement:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
On top of that Drew Goddard had this to say:
“It is not hyperbole to say ‘The Matrix’ films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
Obviously it’s still early on in production, but with a writer/director in place and the gears churning, hopefully we’ll learn more about this sooner rather than later!
What do you hope to see out of The Matrix 5?
