On June 16th, 7 black friends will flirt with death during a Juneteenth weekend trip in The Blackening. Lionsgate pictures released the trailer for the comedy-horror film, and it looks … quite interesting.
The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth
weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. Directed by Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and co-written by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) and Dewayne Perkins (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), The Blackening skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast of a horror movie is Black, who dies first
Look when I first saw anything for this film my first thought was “Man, is this racist?”. Then I’m sent the article by my wonderful editor and again I ask “Yo, this gotta be racist?”. After watching the trailer, a few giggles later – it’s mostly not. I’m sure there will be someone greatly offended by it later. The movie mixes a few types of horror films for the finished product. I mean if you’ve seen ‘Scary Movie I-V’, it seems to be on par with those films.
the seven friends find themselves trapped in a Cabin in the Woods, where they are forced play some kind of Truth or Dare board game to save one of their friends lives. While the killer guides them thru a Jigsaw type storyline. The only difference in this is the entire cast is Black and well we know when weird stuff happens Black folks either die first or they try to find the first exit out of Weirdsville.
I will certainly be on the lookout for this one this June.
