Lucasfilm has apparently inked a deal with Simon Kinberg for him to write/produce a new trilogy of films set in the galaxy far, far away.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: new Star Wars films are in the works. They don’t have release dates, but they have some ideas/people attached to work on them. This time around, word has come that Simon Kinberg has been tapped by Lucasfilm to write and produce an all new trilogy of films. These would be separate from the previously announced films.
Deadline broke the news, which was subsequently confirmed by other outlets and Kinberg himself on social media. Though initial reports mentioned this trilogy would be Episode X-XII, that’s not the case. This will be all new characters and story, with the potential for existing characters to appear, however.
Myself, and many other fans, feel a bit…mixed on the news. On one hand, we’ve got some Star Wars news, which is always fun. On the other, Lucasfilm has struggled to get ONE film out the door over the past several years, with a slew of false starts leaving many of us skeptical. On top of that, Kinberg himself is an interesting choice. The man did co-create Star Wars Rebels (even writing some of the series’ best episodes), but his track record with the X-Men franchise—and the disastrous Dark Phoenix—is tough to forget at the moment.
Personally, I’d like to get some firm updates on the previously announced films (especially the New Jedi Order one), but at this point, I’m glad to see Lucasfilm is still trying to churn something out. Let’s hope this new trilogy pans out unlike the Rian Johnson and Benioff/Weiss ones.
What would you like to see out of these new Star Wars films?
