Filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Rian Johnson, James Cameron, Ava DuVernay, and more have joined with the UHD Alliance to develop a new Filmmaker Mode TV setting that will arrive next year.
If you want to ensure that you’re watching movies at home exactly the way the filmmakers intended you to watch it, then you’ll be excited about the new Filmmaker Mode. I know not everyone cares about this as much, but for film buffs/nerds, there’s something to be said about a properly presented image coming through your big screen at home.
In the battle against the dreaded “Motion Smoothing” setting, which most TVs come defaulted to, a large group of prominent filmmakers banded together to work with the UHD Alliance (an organization of movie studios and tech manufacturers). Their work has now bore fruit with the development of the Filmmaker Mode. This new mode will strip away the extraneous settings in order to present the film exactly as intended for audiences.
“When Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan reached out to the UHDA about extending the cinematic experience into the living room, we were eager and ideally situated to engage in the conversation,” said UHD Alliance Chairman, Michael Zink of Warner Bros. “The Ultra HD TVs from supporting CE members are capable of delivering a range of viewing options and the addition of Filmmaker Mode for cinematic content, which is based on input from a broad range of preeminent filmmakers, provides a way for consumers to better experience the filmmaker’s vision.”
Several consumer TV manufacturers have announced they’ll be implementing the feature, including Vizio, which plans to launch Filmmaker Mode in their 2020 models:
VIZIO is supporting this industry initiative by incorporating the standards developed by the UHDA for Filmmaker Mode, which will allow viewers to optimize their UHD TVs for a more cinematic experience. The new mode will adjust the picture quality settings so the movie or television show can be displayed as it was intended by the filmmaker. At an event on August 27, the UHDA announced the new standard, which will be consistent across the television industry.
“Joining the UHD Alliance’s Filmmaker Mode initiative was immediately compelling and our team is fully embracing this new industry standard to ensure viewers can experience content the way it was intended,” said Bill Baxter, Chief Technology Officer, VIZIO. “At VIZIO, we are constantly innovating by integrating meaningful features and technologies into our TVs and Sound Bars and partnering with other leaders to provide stronger, smart features for an unmatched entertainment experience.”
