The Casual Cinecast reviews the Oscar nominated film Shoplifters; talks Alita: Battle Angel, Oscars changes & more!

As always, before moving into the main review for Shoplifters, there’s a “What’s On Our Mind?” section, where each host goes over the media they’ve been consuming over the last week! This week Mike watched the new Netflix dramedy show Russian Doll, starring Natasha Lyonne. Meanwhile Chris continues his theatrical journey through Akira Kurosawa films, with a conversation about a screening of RAN. Listen, as that makes Mike and Justin both very jealous.

Also, Justin and Chris both saw the new romantic comedy, Isn’t it Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth. Does this film manage to rise above the typical rom-com tropes, or simply revel in them? Then the guys move into a discussion about the new Robert Rodriguez film Alita: Battle Angel, go over listen submitted question, and decide whether or not this manga adapatation is worth your time. Before the main review, there’s follow-up conversation from last weeks episode regarding the most recent changed to the Academy Awards broadcast. What changes have been made now? What exactly do those changes mean for the ceremony?

Then it’s time for the main event! The Casual Cinecast finally reviews Shoplifters, directed by Hirokazi Koreeda. This film won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Fesitval in 2018, and has been gaining postive word-of-mouth all throughout last year. That means it’s been a hotly anticpated film for Mike, Chris and Justin, for a while now. Does this film deserve all the praise it’s been receiving?
