“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
These are words that the creative minds currently bringing the 3rd reboot of the Hellboy franchise to theaters, have either never heard, heard, or are just ignoring. Whichever way the horn snaps, it’s led us to this moment, and the trailer drop for Millenium Media’s upcoming movie release “Hellboy: The Crooked Man”
Reuniting Hellboy creator Mike Mignola with horror writer Christopher Golden (who worked on the 2019 David Harbour staring reboot but was uncredited) and directed by Brian Taylor (Crank, Happy!) “The Crooked Man” takes our cigar-chomping, wise-cracking, revolver-wielding cambion deep into the old forests and hills of Appalachia. Replacing David Harbour under the prosthetics that bring Hellboy to life, is Jack Kesy, who some may recognize from his role as Black Tom Cassidy in “Deadpool 2”
Joining the cast of “The Crooked Man” is Jefferson White, in the role of Tom Ferrell, Adeline Rudolph as Bobbie Jo Song, Joseph Marcell, as Reverend Nathanial Armstrong Watts, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Hannah Margeston as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale, pulling double duty as both the big bad for the film, The Crooked Man, and also portraying Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm, the head of the BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) and Hellboy’s adoptive father.

No official release date has been set yet and it will be interesting to see if the more horror-influenced take on Hellboy will encourage fans to come out. “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” feels like a distinct departure from the Ron Perlman offerings that were heavy on the comic book tropes throughout both movies, and even the grittier take of the David Harbour staring released in 2019.
If you ever asked yourself, what would happen if Hellboy showed up in a movie like “The Conjuring” or “THE VVITCH”, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” appears to be wanting to scratch that itch.
With any luck, the third time will be the charm, and Millenium Media can break out of the cycle of lackluster Hellboy films, but judging the movie by this first trailer, they’ll have their work cut out for them.
