M3GAN’s Your Friend Till the End in First Trailer

One day, people will figure out it’s time to leave evil anthropomorphic dolls alone. Today is not that day, but M3GAN still looks pretty great.

This morning brings the first trailer for the new Blumhouse horror flick, M3GAN. While it, ostensibly, bears plenty of similarities to Child’s Play (especially the recent reboot attempt), this trailer brings a certain creep factor that feels fresh:

Again, AI gone wrong isn’t exactly new. Neither are dolls/imaginary friends turning into bloodthirsty monsters. Even so, there’s something about this trailer that really sticks with me. From the lifeless eyes while she’s dancing around creepily, to her more unnatural movements, M3GAN is bringing a chill factor beyond being a rehash of other ideas. Color me intrigued for this one.

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma (Get Out’s Allison Williams), M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.

When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw, The Haunting of Hill House), Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.

M3GAN hits theaters on January 13, 2023.
