According to an exclusive from Deadline, Marvel has brought Jake Schreier on board to direct their upcoming Thunderbolts film with Black Widow writer, Eric Pearson, set to script the film.
Schreier has previously directed music videos for Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar, and the 2014 film ‘Paper Towns’. Shooting is expected to begin next summer.
Details about the film are scarce, with no official confirmation from Marvel. In the comics, the Thunderbolts are a, more or less, legitimate team of super-villains and anti-heroes that have ranged from Venom to Deadpool.
Suspicions of the MCU’s version of the team arriving soon have been growing since the introduction of Julia Louis Dreyfus as Val. She appeared in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Black Widow as the new boss of John Walker and Yelena Belova, seeming to build a lineup of “not quite superheroes”.
Reintroducing previous Marvel villains such as Zemo and Abomination have only added fuel to the fire. Along with characters like Ghost and Taskmaster still remaining alive within the MCU and their stories being left fairly open-ended.
Traditionally Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is the main founder of the Thunderbolts, hence the nickname. But with William Hurt’s passing earlier this year, it is unclear if they plan to recast or go a different route in the group’s origin
September will see the return of Disney’s D23 event, where Marvel is confirmed to be holding a panel. No doubt that we will be seeing announcements for both film and television projects so perhaps an official confirmation will be arriving then.
