This is the first R rated film in the Spider-Man world of Sony, sorry Carnage, and it seems to be going in an odd direction….
The trailer shows how Kraven comes to be and it is substantially altered from the comics. In the comics Kraven has a rather dark and somewhat sad story that makes him become the hunter, and the trailer somewhat plays into some of this story. Where things take a very strange turn is when he gets attacked by a lion, some blood from the lion leaks into his wound and….he gains lion powers….
Wait, what? In the comics Kraven is already an excellent hunter, the way he gains his “powers” is via Calypso which gives him some elixirs that enhance his hunting abilities. In some panels of the comics you can see him using these to push through some hard hunts.
Instead in the trailer it looks like he’s granted lion powers and is even seen jumping along walls on all fours just like a lion. Can we say (K)ringe?
That doesn’t take away from the brutal nature of the trailer though. It looks gory just like Kraven should be. Plus, like I said, the initial backstory does seem to play into the darker tones of his character.
