We may not know exactly what the next Godzilla and Kong Monsterverse film will bring, but now we know who is going to bring it to our eyeballs.
With Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs Kong, Godzilla X Kong) stepping back from the Monsterverse to work on something different, Legendary has already set their sights on who will lead the next film featuring the iconic titans. Grant Sputore, who directed the sci-fi thriller I AM MOTHER (starring Hilary Swank), will take the helm this time around.
It’s a relatively solid choice, and feels a lot like when Gareth Edwards was chosen for the first Godzilla (having only one, well received feature under his belt). The new Monsterverse film is being written by Dave Callaham, though details at this point are pretty slim. No matter, I’m always thrilled for more monster action!
Sputore’s debut feature, I AM MOTHER, stars Hilary Swank, Clara Rugaard, and Rose Byrne. The sci-fi thriller premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews before being acquired by Netflix.
As a commercial director, Sputore’s work has been recognized at every major advertising award show around the world, including the Cannes Lions, D&AD, Clios, Spikes, NY Festivals, London International and AWARD. Sputore is represented by CAA, Navigation Media Group, and Jeff Hynick and Peter C. Sample at Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Ten years strong, Legendary’s Monsterverse is an expansive cross-platform story universe centering around humanity’s battle to survive in a world facing a catastrophic new reality – the monsters of our myths and legends are real. Beginning with GODZILLA in 2014 and continuing through 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND, 2019’s GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, 2021’s GODZILLA VS. KONG, and most recently the record-breaking GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE, the Monsterverse has accumulated over two-and-a-half-billion-dollars at the global box office and expanded into the highly successful event series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” for Apple TV+. Including an inter-connected world of video games, graphic novels, toys and live experiences, it represents epic entertainment on the largest possible scale.
There’s no release date just yet for the new Monsterverse film, but we’ll be keeping an eye on its progress for sure!
