Can the Duffer Brothers save another attempt at a live action adaptation of Death Note?
Matt & Ross Duffer want to try. The brothers announced on Wednesday the creation of Upside Down Pictures and named a number of projects they’ll be tackling first, according to Deadline.
The Duffer Brothers told Deadline they want to create the kind of stories they were inspired by as kids, “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”
The Stranger Things creators said they’re going to tackle an “entirely new take” on the adaptation for the anime Death Note for Netflix, just 5 years after the failed film on the streaming giant.
Also on the slate is an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s 1984 novel The Talisman in collaboration with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television. It will reportedly be created by Stranger Things’ co-executive producer and writer Curtis Gwinn.
“It’s much more fantasy. It has sci-fi. It has horror elements. It has a lot of heart. It has everything that we love. And it’s got the best werewolf character I think, ever,” Matt Duffer told Deadline.
Upside Down Pictures is also working on an original series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), as well as a stage play set in the world and mythology of Stranger Things.
These projects join the Duffer Brother’s already existing plans for a Stanger Things spin-off.
The pair will begin writing the final season Stranger Things next month.
