The surprise casting information just keeps on coming for the Russo Brothers’ next major Marvel motion picture, as The Wrap broke news this afternoon that MCU megastar Chris Evans will be returning to the fold for the events of Avengers: Doomsday!
Details are unsurprisingly quite scarce, and as of now, there is no further information on just how extensive or important Evans’ role will be in the new film. At this point, it’s equally as likely that we’ll just see Evans reprising his role in something like a short flashback as it is that we’ll see a fully-costumed Captain America return as a multiversal variant to the original Star Spangled Man With a Plan. Either way, he won’t be the first shocking return to the franchise, considering the bombshell news at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con that Robert Downey, Jr. would be portraying one of Marvel’s most notorious villains, the dreaded Doctor Doom.
Despite the character’s storyline ending fairly conclusively in Avengers: Endgame, Chris Evans is no stranger to later-phase Marvel movies. He recently appeared in Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine in a bait-and-switch cameo as none other than his original Marvel cinematic debut, Fantastic Four‘s Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch.
What do you expect we’ll see out of Evans in the Russos’ next major Marvel event film? Who else might be making a surprise return?
If you can’t get enough Chris Evans in your life (and who can?) you can catch him opposite Dwayne Johnson in Amazon MGM’s Christmastime action romp Red One, in theaters now.
