Winifred Phillips has provided a magical score for the 3D reimagining of the classic computer game Wizardry.
Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a lovingly-crafted full-3D remake of the smash-hit game from 1981 that established the party-based dungeon crawler genre, laying the foundation for an entire genre of fantasy adventures that include Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Quest, Might and Magic, and Final Fantasy.
The soundtrack for this revamped game was assembled by Winifred Phillips, previously covered here for her work on Horse Club Adventures. The score for Wizardry recently won a Telly Award for Best Music for a Game and two Gold Nyx Game Awards for Best Game Soundtrack and Best Music for a PC Game.
The music for this soundtrack is the best of everything you’d ever want to hear for this type of game. My particular favorites are the tracks “Gilgamesh’s Tavern” and “Adventurer’s Inn.” Both tracks reminded me of something you’d hear while listening to Critical Role: it’s the thrumming, upbeat type of sound that is associated with adventuring taverns the world over.
I also like how, while the music is updated for the remake of the game, it is also clearly grounded in its roots from the early gaming era. I never played the original Wizardry game, but I can imagine what it would’ve sounded like and this pays homage to that with much love.
Fans of classic video games are highly encouraged to check this soundtrack out. It helps to breathe new life into an iconic fantasy game and fans of video game music will find many things to enjoy about it.
