The tease of PlayStation themes for the PS5 ends tomorrow, but there is hope for the future.
Sony had a surprise update a little while ago that brought themes to the PS5 for the first time. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, the PS5 got the classic original boot sequence of the original PS1, along with several selections of themes that mimicked the menus of PS2 through PS4. Each one included unique looks and of course the sounds of the period.
Personally I found all of this to be great. While the boot sequence gets kind of annoying after a while, I personally enjoyed the PS3 theme on my menus. It added a new dynamic to the PS5, and made it a little more unique sitting next to my spouse’s PS2 theme.
Sadly all this is changing when PS5 returns to a boring static theme tomorrow. Sony announced the feature update with the themes will be removed tomorrow, but promised that they are working behind the scenes to bring an update in the “coming months” that will include something similar.
Sony has been dabbling in the idea of adding themes to PS5 for some time. The 30th anniversary update added an entire menu selection in the console’s settings, which possibly could lead to further additions in the future. But Sony also updated the PS5 a few months ago to include a “launch screen” for the PS5, where users could customize the home tab with a custom background and add what games or news they wanted to see up front. However this was limited to a very specific tab on the PS5, and didn’t translate into a full theme.
