The PSVR2 is heading to PC, and that might be the only way we get to play PC VR titles.
Instead of announcing a PSVR2 port of highly requested games like Half Life Alyx, Fallout VR, and War Thunder, Sony announced that the PSVR2 is instead heading to PC. Via the Official PlayStation Blog, Sony announced a new adapter coming out that will enable the PSVR2 to play the Steam library of VR titles.
To get started you need to buy a new Sony adapter which will retail for $59.99. This will be sold at select retailers, along with on Sony’s Direct website. You will also need a Display Port 1.4 compatible cable, a Steam account, and a compatible PC with specs listed on the website.
From there you need to download the PSVR app along with the Steam VR app, set up your play area, and head off into PC VR.
It’s worth noting that while compatible, not all features go along for the ride. PSVR2 on PC will disable HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble). But some features do make it including including 4K visuals (2000 x 2040 per eye), 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, and see-through view, as well as foveated rendering (without eye tracking) and 3D Audio in supported games. (Sony notes that the 3D audio on Steam doesn’t utilize the Tempest 3D audio technology).
The PSVR2 is currently on sale for 100 dollars off via the Days of Play sale at all retailers and Sony Direct.
I’ve been a huge fan of PSVR2 and when experiences are done right, it’s a stellar platform to play games on, but the lack of support as of late is rather disappointing. While a majority of the support is coming from third parties porting their games over, it’s honestly shocking that instead of Sony working on deals to get the noted games in this announcement, their answer is to push you to PC instead. The first party support hasn’t been too strong either, but that seems to be a general PS5 issue at this point.
