First Tokyo Extreme Racer in Nearly 2 Decades Releases This Month

Get your engines ready! Japanese developer Genki Co., Ltd revealed the first Tokyo Xtreme Racer in 18 years will launch into early access on PC later this month.

The news the new entry will release on January 22 was revealed on social media, along with an explanation as to why they chose the early access route on Steam. The post lists January 23 as the release date, but the Store page lists January 22.

“The simple answer is that we are eager t get feedback from our gamers,” the post says. “Our fans are some of the most passionate in the racing community (they’ve stuck with us for nearly two decades of absence after all!) and it would be foolish of us not to listen to their thoughts and feedback on our new game. By incorporating the feedback we receive, we aim to further improve and evolve the game to provide a superior gaming experience for our fans.

“Over the past 18 year, the industry and genre have changed significantly. The environment in which people play games and the technology behind game development have evolve rapidly, allowing for a variety of gaming platforms, including PC, mobile, and VR. The reason we chose PC first was because we believe it will allow the most ease of access to our fans all over the world as well as allow us to tweak and improve the game as quickly as we can.”

The game will feature a faithful recreation of the Tokyo Expressway, including “the complex twists and dramatic elevation changes deliver an adrenaline-pumping racing experience that’s as close to the real thing as it gets,” according to the game’s description on Steam.

Tokyo Xtreme Racing is also “unlike regular racing games” in that it includes the Spirit Point Battle feature using Spirit Points which are “a numeric value that quantifies the willpower of drivers.”
