Sony PlayStation has finally revealed the PS5 Pro, offering details on the enhanced console including a release date and pricing.
During this morning’s “Technical Showcase,” Sony’s Mark Cerny took gamers on a look through the all new PlayStation 5 Pro. Namely, he spotlighted the three main performance features that make the console itself improved:
Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPU that has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.
As far as looks go, it’s pretty consistent with the current PS5 line-up, so nothing too earth-shaking here. Though it’s important to note the Pro is being sold ONLY in the disc-less model with a 2TB SSD. Yes, that means you’ll have to purchase the (already available) disc drive separately if you want to stay physical.
That’s a little less than ideal, especially considering the PlayStation 5 Pro is coming in at a whopping $700. Oh yeah, and the vertical stand isn’t even included in that price point!
Got to be honest here, this feels insane. While I love my PS5, nothing revealed in the showcase really justifies making the upgrade. $200 more than a base PS5 for a better framerate across games is just crazy to me. Even more so when they don’t have any NEW games to show it off with.
The PlayStation 5 Pro launches on November 7, 2024 for $699.99. Pre-orders at participating retailers and directly through PlayStation (at direct.playstation.com) begins on September 26th. Will you be making the jump?
