Funcom revealed a new story trailer for Dune: Awakening, revealing the game will tell a “what if” style tale about Paul Atreides never being born!
Many fans have wondered how Dune: Awakening would fit into the overall story of Dune. Today, during Summer Game Fest, we finally got our answer: it doesn’t! Awakening will actually tell a “what if” kind of story, stemming from one of Paul’s branching visions of the future, envisioning a universe in which his mother obeyed the Bene Gesserit order and never birthed him.
The repercussions are major, and the resulting world is where we, the player comes in. This is a really neat approach to the story. One that allows players to still interact with iconic stuff, without being hemmed in completely by the story we all know and love. Even better, it works within the canon as being one of Paul’s alt-history visions. I’m loving it. The only thing I don’t like, is I’m not playing it right now.
A single moment that changes everything. An Arrakis torn by a War of Assassins. The Fremen missing. And yet the spice must flow. This is your Arrakis.
Dune: Awakening combines the grit and creativity of sandbox survival games with the social interactivity of a large, persistent multiplayer game to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO.
Dune: Awakening doesn’t have a release date just yet, but will be getting a full gameplay reveal at Gamescom in August.
