Jump in your Tesla cages and get ready to duke it out, because today’s Marvel SNAP brought along with it the limited-time game event, High Voltage! This rapid-fire, fast-paced new game mode takes everything that players like about Marvel SNAP and compresses it even more tightly into a 3-round, lightning-quick match that’s nearly over before you know it.
The Rules
High Voltage sees Marvel SNAP players beginning a match with two cards in hand, and on every turn (including the first), players will draw two more cards. There is no Snapping in this mode, instead the Snap Cube’s real estate on-screen is taken up by the Arc Reactor.
Each turn, the Arc Reactor generates between 2-5 Max Energy that gets added to both players’ totals. This means that, by turn 3, players will have anywhere between 6 and a whopping 15 points of energy to spend on their plays.
The game plays out as normal otherwise, with each player trying to end the game with more points than their opponent on at least two of the three locations. It’s just ending in half the time and with potentially twice as much max energy!
The pool of available locations has also been updated to remove later-game and play-restricting locations like Asgard and Pet Mansion, and a handful of cards have also been banned from this mode in order to help keep things fast and fun: Galactus, Black Widow, and Magik.
The Rewards
In High Voltage you earn Volts, a new limited-time currency. Every Volt earned progresses a reward track, which in turn grants the player credits, a Red Neon border, and, at the top of the track, a brand-new Series 4 card in Agony and an exclusive new Iron Man variant by Iban Coello.
Volts can be earned by simply winning games, but also by completing High Voltage Missions. These are very similar to the Daily Missions that Marvel SNAP players will already be familiar with. You are only given three at a time compared to the Daily Mission’s six, though, so be sure to complete them while you can so new ones can refill your list.
The reward track is short and sweet, as is befitting of the mode’s rapid and temporary nature. Getting to the 8,000 Volt mark to reach Agony should be well within reach for any players who put in at least some dedicated time to attaining her.
The Recommendations
Players will want to bring with them to High Voltage mode a whole new perspective on deck building. The highly increased maximum energy means that multiple six-cost cards will be able to be played. At the very least, be sure to pack your decks heavier on Energy cost than usual. For the most part, very few 1-Cost cards will likely be worth your time. These cards just do not provide enough Power or ability to be worth your precious few turns in this mode. Some exceptions may be things like Hydra Bob’s sheer 5-Power weight or, more likely, someone like Sunspot who can soak up any unspent Energy.
The sweet spot seems like it will be to employ a hefty amount of 3-, 4-, and 5-Cost cards. These cards have some of the best bang for your buck in terms of power and abilities, especially when they are able to be played early. Even so, be sure to bring along at least a couple heavy-hitter 6-Costs to close things out!
The most important advice I can give, though, is simply to have a good time with it. There are no consequences for losing a game of High Voltage, and the rewards track is far more simple and straight-forward than it was during Marvel SNAP’s last event, Deadpool’s Diner. Try some things out, play the cards you enjoy playing, and just get in there and see what shakes out! There’s only a week to make it happen, so why wait?
Marvel SNAP’s High Voltage event runs from October 16, 2024 to 12:00PM PST, October 24, 2024.
