Last month, Ravensburger launched a new “expandalone” for their popular Star Wars Villainous game, titled Revenge at Last. Like the other ones, this is designed to be playable either as a complete standalone adventure (for just two players), or in tandem with the main Star Wars Villainous game (up to five).
As a Darth Maul diehard and collector, you know I had to get my hands on this, and thankfully Ravensburger helped me out. I’m not going to dive into all the specifics of the gameplay itself (it can be a bit complicated), but here are the basics of this newest expansion which allows players to take on the role of either Darth Maul or Captain Phasma:
Darth Maul and Captain Phasma join Ravensburger’s award-winning game system in this “expandalone” box that can be played on its own or combined with any Star Wars Villainous title! Be the first Villain to achieve your objective to win. Each Villain’s deck of cards is designed with a gameplay strategy inspired by the film, shows, and media you love. Wield their cards well to plot, scheme, and conquer your way to victory in this immersive game for the Dark Side.
The heart of gameplay is simple. Move your Villain’s sculpted mover to a new location on their sector board to access the actions at that location. Use actions to play your cards, move closer to your objective, and draw from your opponents’ Fate deck disrupt their carefully made plans with meddling heroes. How will you manipulate your abilities to dominate the galaxy?
While the game feels a tad complicated when you first start going through the instructions, it’s really quite accessible. Think of it like a game of two-player Tetris. You’re essentially playing your own games, with the goal being to complete your main tasks/quests before your opponent. Like in the Tetris analogy, you’re able to throw some stuff at your opponent (via different Fate cards) in order to hamper their progress. Thus you must balance the strategy involved as your work with your own deck while keeping your opponent off balance.
What I like about the standalone expansion, is that it feels a bit more balanced in play. When you play in larger groups in the main Villainous game, it’s easy to gang up on a specific player, and thus sometimes winning boils down more to luck than anything else. In my time with Revenge at Last, I didn’t encounter that, and the newer gameplay elements it adds made it feel like strategy was the key factor in winning or losing.
Combine that with some cool gameplay totems and swanky art on the cards, and there’s a lot to love about this $20 game. If you’re shopping for a fan of tabletop games and/or Star Wars, Revenge at Last is a fantastic gift option that won’t break the bank.
Star Wars Villainous: Revenge at Last is available right now both online and in major retailers (like Target) for $20.
